Written by the Granddaughter of Chief Justice Earl Warren:

Warren Doll Collection from Around the World

When my grandfather was appointed to the Supreme Court, he had the opportunity to travel widely internationally, with my grandmother, to meet heads of state and be introduced to the country. My expert shopper grandmother would choose the highest quality dolls she could find for me and from the mid-1950s to early 1970s,
she gave me these for my collection.
(From Alaska, the senator gifted her, an indigenous doll.) My first doll was an 18-inch Italian girl. I never really played with the dolls, but would carefully arrange them in my display cabinets, and enjoyed looking at them, imagining what they did at night (as in the Nutcracker). When I taught elementary school, I would bring representative dolls of the country we would be studying (realia), so my students could see actual customary clothing and accessories and that would deepen learning. For those students whose ancestors came from that country, it was a bonus for them to make the connection to their relatives. Parts of the doll collection were displayed in the Governor’s Mansion in the mid-1990s. Some dolls and accessories were gifts, mainly from my mother who was an antique dealer. Some dolls were ones that I purchased from an estate sale in Curtis Park, circa 1990 or from my trip to Japan in 1977.
